On 19 November 2022, we held the second Coventry Counts Dead Women Vigil in Shelton Square, Coventry city centre.
This year, we remembered 114 UK women who had been killed by men during the previous 12 months. Once again, a pair of shoes represented each woman, creating a striking and moving display in the heart of the city that invited reflection, remembrance and conversation.
Throughout the day, we gathered every hour on the hour to read aloud the names of the women. Hearing each name spoken was an emotional and deeply personal tribute, ensuring that every woman was acknowledged as an individual whose life mattered. For many visitors, the silence that followed each reading spoke as powerfully as the names themselves.
Details from the Femicide Census were displayed alongside the installation, enabling members of the public to learn more about thewomen whose lives had been taken and to better understand the devastating scale and impact of male violence against women.
Together, we believe a future free from male violence against women and girls is possible and we will continue to gather, to remember, and to demand change until that future becomes a reality.
Our vigil is about more than remembrance. It is a call to action.
