On 25 November 2023, we held the third Coventry Counts Dead Women Vigil to remember 116 UK women killed by men during the previous 12 months.
In Smithford Way, beside Coventry’s iconic Central Fountain, 116 pairs of shoes stood in a stark grid, a silent tribute to lives cut short and a call to end male violence against women and girls.
Throughout the day, the names of all 116 women were read aloud every hour on the hour. Each reading was a poignant act of remembrance, ensuring that every woman was acknowledged as an individual whose life mattered. Hearing their names echo through the city created moments of reflection and reminded us that behind every statistic was a woman who was loved, valued and is deeply missed.
As in previous years, local organisations supporting women affected by abuse, exploitation and violence joined us to offer information, advice and support. We were grateful to welcome Panahghar, Coventry Haven, Valley House and Kairos, whose presence created opportunities for meaningful conversations with members of the public and highlighted the support available within our community.
Every conversation helps to challenge misconceptions, raise awareness and encourage people to stand against violence towards women and girls.
The vigil continues to be a place of remembrance, education and action.
